Georgetown has a long history spanning back to 1791 when the county seat moved there from Lewes, which was criticized for being too far from western Delaware. Originally, Georgetown was laid out in a large square, but that was quickly changed to the circle we all associate with Georgetown with the historic Georgetown Circle at the center. Georgetown was, and still is, boasted as being “sixteen miles from anywhere” in Sussex County at the exact center of the county. This is referenced by the 16 Mile Brewing Company located in Georgetown. Now, Georgetown’s landmark buildings and the Georgetown Circle remind us of its over two hundred years of history.
Other historic landmarks in Georgetown include The Brick Hotel on The Circle, the original Old Courthouse, the new red brick and Greek revival Sussex County Courthouse that was built in 1839, the Historic Georgetown Train Station, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and the Masonic Lodge. Most of these landmarks surround the original Georgetown Circle that is now home to a small park and fountain to maintain the historic feel of the town.
Besides history, Georgetown is home to a diverse business landscape with a robust Hispanic community contributing to the town’s rich culture. The Hispanic community has introduced some rich new food and community traditions into this old town. This culture pairs well with Georgetown’s affordable real estate, which is closely managed for growth and development to maintain the historic feel of the town.
The town is also home to numerous higher learning facilities, medical service centers and a strong business community aiming to keep southern Delaware competitive with northern Delaware. A few chain restaurants and large stores along with a healthy number of small and family owned businesses accommodate the population of Georgetown and its surrounding areas.
Like most of Sussex County, Georgetown boasts its “near the beach” status to residents and visitors creating a diverse community with a healthy economy. This coupled with plenty of academic opportunities reveal a promising future for Georgetown. So, with the resort beaches just a short drive away, Georgetown becomes a great place to live, work and play for everyone young and old.
